Leake/Parsons/ARCS Award
Ph.D. Student, Genetics
University of Georgia
First Year ARCS Scholar
Natalie is a first-year Genetics doctoral student at the University of Georgia where she uses monkey flower species to study the genetic basis of plant speciation. Her academic journey began at Fullerton Community College, local to her home in Southern California, and she received a B.S. in Plant Science and a B.S. in Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Upon graduation, she moved to New Orleans to work as a lab technician at Tulane University. While there she developed an interest in understanding genetic incompatibilities between plant species that prevent successful hybridization. As a Latina in science, Natalie plans to use her career as a vehicle for improving scientific outreach and communication.
