On April 8, 2014, twenty-six ARCS Foundation Atlanta Chapter members and guests met at the Emory Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. Allan Levey, M.D.,Ph.D., director of the Center, gave an overview of recent research. He discussed Alzheimer's demographics, causes and medications, as well as the roles of inflammation, diet and stress. Malu Tansey, Ph.D., continued with a more detailed look at the causes for both Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. They both emphasized the need for healthy volunteers to participate in studies in an attempt to determine early markers for the disease, which can take twenty years to become symptomatic. After lunch guests were taken on a tour of the labs.
