Educational Event with Dr. Ray Kotwicki

Posted on Monday, January 16, 2023

Emerging science behind the development, presentation, and treatments of major mental illnesses

The fall educational event, held Thursday, November 3rd, took place in the Goodman Training Center at Skyland Trail. ARCS member Beth Finnerty, president and CEO of Skyland Trail was there to welcome us. Approximately twenty-seven members attended the program and enjoyed a box lunch during the presentation.

The speaker Dr. Ray Kotwicki, the Charles B. West Chief Medical Officer at Skyland Trail, discussed “Mental Health 201: Emerging science behind the development, presentation, and treatments of major mental illnesses.” His presentation, derived from research and an evidence-based approach, suggested that mental illnesses develop through complex interactions of genetics and environment, and show up in both physical and behavioral ways. He discussed various types of mental illnesses, describing their mental and physical symptoms.

Since mental health has been an ongoing concern in recent years, especially since the pandemic, it was reassuring to hear Dr. Kotwicki argue persuasively that mental illnesses are medical problems that respond to timely, effective, and respectful interventions. The slide and oral presentation was fascinating and prompted many questions from our members. We are truly lucky to have a world- class mental health program in our community and were fortunate to have Dr. Kotwicki educate us on current research in the mental health arena.
