Silver Anniversary Annual Meeting and Luncheon

Posted on Wednesday, May 10, 2017

In honor of the Atlanta Chapter's Silver Anniversary, the chapter funded an additional scholar at each of our partner institutions.  For the concluding event of this very special year, these four scholars were the speakers at our Annual Meeting in May held at the Piedmont Driving Club.

Speakers were: Emily Crispell, Emory (Microbiology & Molecular Genetics); Daniel Moreno, Georgia Tech (Mechanical Engineering); Amir Hobson, Morehouse (Chemistry) and Daniel Becker, UGA (Ecology). Each scholar shared information about his or her individual area of study concluding with a brief Q & A.

Emily Crispell discussed novel antibiotic resistance mechanisms and detection methods and inhibitors. Daniel Moreno had a dual focus the importance of clean water, which is still unavailable to many people worldwide, and development of renewable energy sources for energy storage. Amir Hobson talked about his work developing injectable gel for knee joints to induce cartridge regeneration. Daniel Becker told us how his field studies and mathematical modeling are increasing the understanding of how activities that alter wildlife food sources affect infectious diseases.  Daniel thanked us for our funding which helped fund his visits to Glasgow to do lab work in serology as well as three years of field work in Peru and other sites where he worked with vampire bats.

The lovely floral arrangements were designed by Carolynn Cooper and the PDC served a delicious luncheon.  Listening to each of these scholars, the brightest and best in their fields, reminds us of the importance of our ARCS mission.
