Scholar Alumni Spotlight: Kate Birdwhistell

Dual DVM/PhD Candidate Pursuing Regenerative Orthopedic Research

Kate Birdwhistell, the 2017-19 UPS ARCS Scholar, is a PhD candidate in Comparative Biomedical Sciences at the University of Georgia. Kate is currently in a dual DVM/PhD program in UGA’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She is a Graduate Student and Graduate Assistant in the Department of Large Animal Medicine. Since starting her graduate work, Kate has had first author publications in the Journal of Knee Surgery and the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation. She has also co-authored publications in the American Journal of Sports Medicine and Frontiers in Veterinary Science. She was a speaker at UGA’s College of Veterinary Medicine’s 11th Annual Science of Veterinary Medicine. Kate obtained her BS in Chemistry from Loyola University of New Orleans. As an undergraduate, she trained in several different research laboratories to diversify her skills and ultimately solidify her interest in regenerative orthopedic research. During her undergraduate years, she was awarded the American Chemical Society Award for Outstanding Student in Organic Chemistry as well as the American Chemical Society Award for Community Service and Outreach.
