President’s Letter – May 2025

Posted on Friday, May 23, 2025

It has been such an honor to hold the office of chapter president for the last two years.  I’m incredibly proud of the work we do and am convinced it is more important than ever.  Every day seems to bring news of more cuts to scientific research by the federal government and a potential brain drain in American culture.  We have been fortunate that none of our current scholars have had their positions or programs eliminated.  Unfortunately, many large research universities are cutting programs, positions, or are not admitting new PhD candidates.  Although our university partners remain optimistic about the coming year, they have expressed concern about the future.

All these changes make the work we do even more important.  Even before the recent changes, many PhD candidates struggled to make ends meet and needed our awards to meet their basic needs.  Now, additional cuts to university budgets can only make this struggle more difficult.  Our speakers at the annual meeting, Dr. Mochel and Dr. Zdyrski, expressed concern that the US might experience a brain drain.  Other countries, in particular China, Norway, and Denmark, are actively recruiting American scientists to come work in their labs and teach in their universities.  Giving our scholars some financial cushion may help them resist these tempting offers to work abroad.  The increase to our basic award by 20% could not have come at a better time.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my job has been getting to know the chapter membership.  It is truly an amazing group of women.  It is inspirational to work with such a generous and hard-working team.  As I pass the gavel to Frances Swensson, I know the chapter is in good hands.  Frances brings a wealth of experience to the job.  Not only has she held multiple positions within our ARCS chapter, but she is active in many other philanthropic organizations.  In addition, she will bring her signature warmth and enthusiasm to the job.  We are fortunate she is willing to lead the Atlanta chapter, and I look forward to assisting her as she takes us into the future.
