National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology Visits Georgia
In March, The State of Georgia had the privilege of hosting commissioners and staff from the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology (NSCEB) across several sites in Georgia as part of the Commission’s Biotech Across America Roadshow.
The visit provided an opportunity for federal leaders to hear directly from industry executives, researchers, students, and state and local partners about the growing biotechnology ecosystem in our state.
During their visit to Georgia the commissioners spent a day on the GA Tech campus where they toured the Center for Cell Manufacturing and met with ARCS Scholars to learn about the biotech research occurring in Georgia. Six ARCS Atlanta Scholars were selected to represent the State of Georgia. They were selected based on the innovation and use of emerging technologies in their biotech research. They met with the commissioners and described their research over a networking lunch hosted at Science Square.
The commission’s report on its trip to Georgia, which is published on its website, is entitled: EDUCATION AND OPPORTUNITY MARK STRENGTH OF ATLANTA BIOTECH INDUSTRY.
Commissioner Paul Arcangeli who met with the ARCS Scholars in Atlanta is quoted in the report saying, “America’s biotechnology leadership will ultimately depend on people as much as technology.”
The report goes on to say, “The opportunities in Atlanta are shaping the next generation of biotechnology innovators and developing a legacy of leadership when it comes to training the future workforce.”
The report also highlights the contribution of ARCS Foundation to science in Georgia, noting that “the opportunities for ARCS participants are transformative advantages for regional biotech businesses.”
ARCS Atlanta Scholars representing the State of Georgia to NSCEB were:
- Elise Bezond - Emory
- Sara Kim - Emory
- Heriberto Nieves - Ga Tech
- Neil Patel - UGA
